Cable Express in Perth offers expertise in installing, testing and rectifying problems associated with Safety Switches (also known as Residual Current Devices or RCDs). An RCD is a device that automatically disconnects the electrical supply, when abnormal electrical current flow indicates a possible failure in the wiring insulation or a person coming into contact with live wiring.

RCDs are designed to detect very small amounts of electrical current that are too small to blow a fuse or operate a circuit breaker.  They provide a high level of personal protection and also reduce the risk of fire.

At least two RCDs are mandatory in all new buildings where both power and light circuits must be protected. Legislation regarding retrofitting of RCDs has been introduced.  It will apply to people selling their homes and landlords.  Every home sold or leased will need to be fitted with a minimum of 2 RCDs, which must protect all power and lighting circuits. For homes with a continuing tenancy, landlords have until 8 August 2011. The Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and regulations prescribe that the person having control of a workplace must ensure that all RCDs at the workplace are safe and appropriately tested and maintained by a competent person.

It is essential to test RCDs regularly to ensure they are working correctly and will disconnect the power supply should they be needed.   A Cable Express electrician can install and test your RCD as we carry specialized test equipment that simulates a fault from power outlets within your premises.
